From the Households We Have Served

RN

Rohani binti Nordin

Petaling Jaya

My late mother had forty years of recipes in two worn notebooks, and none of us knew how to turn them into something we could actually keep and give to relatives. The recipe volume Cresthollow produced was quiet and well made β€” it looks exactly right on a shelf alongside her other books. We ordered one volume and then commissioned a second six months later for my brother's family.

We had the estate compendium done over five months last year. I was not sure what to expect β€” we had old photographs, some letters, a few documents in Mandarin that needed note-taking, and no clear sense of how it would come together. The team at Cresthollow were straightforward about what they could include and what fell outside the scope. The finished volume is something the family is genuinely pleased with.

The garden plate was the right choice for us. My father planted that garden over thirty-five years and nobody had ever written any of it down. The visit was easy β€” they came on a Saturday morning, asked sensible questions, and were not at all intrusive. The printed plate arrived three weeks later and it is now framed in the house. Small thing, but the right thing.

I was sceptical that anyone would take a household recipe commission seriously. Cresthollow did. They reviewed the recipes before agreeing to the scope, flagged two that were too incomplete to set down properly, and asked whether we wanted to supply replacements. The proofing stage was thorough. The volume is smaller than I imagined but exactly the right size for what it is.

The estate compendium took exactly as long as they said it would. Five months. My family had been putting off doing something with my grandparents' papers for years β€” it never felt like the right moment, and we did not know where to start. Cresthollow handled the initial material review gently and did not make us feel disorganised for not having everything sorted. The finished volume is careful and dignified.

Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

We had the garden plate done for my wife's family home before it was sold. The garden had been there since 1979. It felt important to record something of it before the property changed hands. Cresthollow were respectful of that reason without making it more than it needed to be. The visit was two hours. The plate arrived on schedule and means a great deal to the family.

Case Study β€” Recipe Volume

Three Generations of Nyonya Cooking, Set Down in One Volume

The Situation

A Petaling Jaya household had seventeen recipes passed through three generations, spread across two handwritten notebooks and one typed document. No consistent format, some entries incomplete. The eldest family member who knew the full context was elderly and wished to see the records in a stable form.

What We Did

We reviewed the seventeen recipes, identified two that required clarification, and held a short correspondence session with the family to fill the gaps. We composed each recipe as a herbarium-style plate entry with a brief note on its provenance within the family. The draft was proofed over two rounds.

The Outcome

Two softbound copies delivered in seven weeks. The family subsequently ordered six additional copies for relatives in Penang and Singapore β€” we reprinted the run at a reduced per-copy rate. The volume is now in four households across two countries.

"We did not expect it to travel so well. That was a pleasant surprise." β€” Rohani N.

Case Study β€” Estate Compendium

A Sixty-Page Compendium of a Klang Valley Household, 1948–2010

The Situation

A family in Kuala Lumpur had boxes of material from a household spanning sixty years: photographs without dates, letters in two languages, handwritten household accounts, newspaper clippings. No order, no index. Three adult children with different views on what should be included.

What We Did

We began with a two-hour consultation to review the material and establish priorities. An initial arrangement was proposed, reviewed, and revised. Editorial work covered selection, sequencing, and short contextual notes. Design and typesetting occupied months three and four. The proofing stage involved all three family members.

The Outcome

Sixty-two pages, delivered in two hardbound copies at the five-month mark. The family donated one copy to the local community heritage library. No significant corrections were required after proofing β€” the early consultation had resolved most of the scope questions before production began.

"The early conversation was worth every minute." β€” Tan K.H.

Case Study β€” Garden Memory Plate

A Recorded History of a Family Garden Before Property Transfer

The Situation

A family in Cheras was preparing to transfer a property that had been in the family since 1979. The garden had been tended continuously for over forty years. No photographs existed from the earlier decades; the main gardener, now in her eighties, was the only source of the full planting history.

What We Did

We arranged the visit on a day convenient for the whole family. Two hours on site, with photography and note-taking guided by the family matriarch. We recorded the planting sequence as she described it and photographed the garden as it currently stood. The plate draft was produced within ten days of the visit.

The Outcome

One printed plate on archival stock, delivered in three weeks. The family had it framed before the property changed hands. The matriarch has since requested two additional copies β€” one for each of her daughters' homes.

"Three weeks, and we have it. That is all it took." β€” Zainuddin R.
